We would like to provide you with the opportunity to travel from the Beurs van Berlage to The National Maritime Museum by boat. Travelling across the water will give you a great impression of Amsterdam. Transportation to your hotel after the gala dinner is not arranged, the hotels are all in 10 or 15 minutes walking distance from The National Maritime Museum. From the Beurs van Berlage to the Maritime Museum it is a nice walk along the canals which takes you about 20 minutes.

Plenary speakers

Professor Bert Aertgeerts

Bert Aertgeerts is a general practitioner and one of the founding members of the Belgian Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (Belgian Branch of the Dutch Cochrane Centre). As a full professor at the KU Leuven he is responsible for the scientific programme within the medical curriculum. He is a member of the board of the faculty of Medicine and of the council of the department of Public Health and Primary Care. He is also head of the department for Primary Care at the KU Leuven. As a programme director he is responsible for the education of young GPs. Since 2009 he is a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine. His research shifted from alcohol screening and diagnostic topics in his early years to Evidence-Based Medicine and implementation of evidence into clinical practice. His concept of a national point-of-care information service for Primary Care, provided by eHealth and incorporated in every available Electronic Health Records offers innovative opportunities for both clinical practice and research.

Professor Pim Assendelft

Professor Willem J.J. (Pim) Assendelft is professor in general practice and head of the department of Primary and Community Care of the Radboud University Medical Center. His research focuses on prevention (connection between public health and primary care), organization of care and outcomes research (trials in complex interventions, research synthesis). Previously, he was professor in general practice in Leiden. Within the Netherlands he was member of several grant committees of Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw). He is member of the Dutch Health Council and the VENI committee (Innovation Research Incentives Scheme).
Before his professorship he was director of the Dutch Cochrane Centre and later on head of guideline development of the Dutch College of General practitioners (NHG). In that position he was one of the founding members of GIN. His aim is to bridge the gap between research and practice. In Nijmegen he is chair of the Radboudumc research theme “Healthcare Improvement Science”. Together with his former Cochrane colleagues Rob Scholten and Martin Offringa he is the editor of the Dutch book Introduction in evidence-based medicine, which is used in student and postgraduate training in most medical schools. He is member of the authorisation committee for the GP guidelines of the NHG and of the scientific committee on ‘care and cure’ of the Health Care Quality Institute.

Professor Lisa Bero

Lisa A. Bero, PhD is Chair of Medicines Use and Health Outcomes at the University of Sydney, Charles Perkins Centre and Faculty of Pharmacy. From 1991 – 2014, she was Professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy, School of Pharmacy and Institute for Health Policy Studies, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco.

Prof. Bero is a pharmacologist who studies how science is translated into clinical practice and health policy. She has developed and validated methods for assessing bias in the design, conduct and reporting of research on pharmaceuticals, tobacco and chemicals. Prof. Bero has served on several committees related to evidence and decisions, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) Essential Medicines Committee and the National Academy of Science Committee to review the Environmental Protection Agency Integrated Risk Information System Process. Prof. Bero was an elected member of the Cochrane Collaboration Steering Group for 12 years and was appointed Co-Chair in 2013.

Professor Michael Buist

Michael is a graduate of Otago Medical School in New Zealand (MB ChB 1983) and completed specialist training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Intensive Care Medicine (FRACP 1991, FJFICM 2002). In 2007 he graduated Doctor of Medicine with the submission of his thesis to Monash University; “The epidemiology and prevention of in hospital cardiac arrests.” He also has a graduate certificate in health economics from Monash University (2001).
He is currently the Director of Intensive Care at the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie, Tasmania and Professor of Health Services at the School of Medicine,  University of Tasmania.

Professor Diana Delnoij

Professor D.M.J. Diana Delnoij (1965) is a political scientist who has worked as a health services researcher for more than 25 years. Since 2013 she is the head of Institute for Healthcare Quality of the National Health Care Institute.

She held research and management positions at NIVEL (Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research), and worked as a health systems researcher for the Department of Social Medicine of the University of Amsterdam.
Diana Delnoij has published on various research topics, such as payment and insurance systems, health systems, general practice, the role of patient organisations, and quality of care from the patient´s perspective. Apart from that, she holds a special interest in public health. She was a member of the board of the European Public Health Association for several years, and is currently still active as an editor of the European Journal of Public Health.

Between 2007 and 2012, she worked as director of the Dutch Centre for Consumer Experience in Healthcare (´Centrum Klantervaring Zorg´). In 2008 she was appointed professor of ´Transparency in healthcare from the patient’s perspective´ at Tilburg University; a part-time position.

Professor Bruce Guthrie

Bruce Guthrie is Professor of Primary Care Medicine at the University of Dundee Medical School where he leads the Quality, Safety and Informatics Research Group, which conducts applied research to translate basic and clinical research into effective and reliable clinical practice.

He was previously an MRC Health Services Research Training Fellow in Edinburgh, an NIHR/CSO Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Dundee, and a Harkness Fellow in Healthcare Policy at the University of California, San Francisco. His research interests focus on the definition, measurement and improvement of quality and safety. His current work primarily examines prescribing safety and multimorbidity, including developing and testing complex interventions in both fields. As well as conducting research, he practices clinically in a socioeconomically deprived area of Scotland, and is a member of a number of NHS advisory bodies, including chairing the guideline development group for the NICE guideline “Multimorbidity: Clinical Assessment and Management”.

Professor Robbert Huijsman

Robbert Huijsman (53) is Professor of Management and Organisation of Elderly Care at the Department of Health Policy and Management of Erasmus University Rotterdam and senior manager for Quality & Innovation with Achmea Care & Health.

Trained as a macro-economist and with a PhD in social sciences (simulation model for care for the elderly), his present research interests are focused on integrated care for elderly and chronically ill, using organisational concepts like franchising and lean management, performance management, outcomes and value-based procurement. Other themes are the relationships between professionals and management and effective policy making to support critical care path ways which break through the traditional boundaries between professionals, organisations, systems and financing schemes. He is the author of many articles (approx. 100 in peer reviewed international journals) and books (approx. 10) on these subjects. In his work at Achmea he leads a group of 35 project leaders, making the transfer from theory to practice, by developing, testing and helping to implement new solutions in chronic care, elderly care and (after) cancer care also using e-health, self and case management concepts.

Jos Kuijs, MD

Jos Kuijs is a medical doctor, as of recently working as medical director for Boehringer Ingelheim in the Netherlands, with more than 20 years experience in Medical departments for different pharma companies. These medical activities relate to conducting clinical trials programs, regulatory affairs, medical support and medical affairs as well as corporate affairs activities. For Nefarma (Dutch association of innovative pharma industry) he is chairman of the Guidelines Working Group. This Working Group has established a collaboration with various guideline committees in the Netherlands. As a result, members of Nefarma have implemented a uniform process participating in guideline development. This working group has worked and is still working closely together with all relevant stakeholders in guidelines to provide additional information on innovation in the different stages of guideline development.

Dr. Craig Lockwood

Dr Craig Lockwood is Associate Professor in the Joanna Briggs Institute, Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Adelaide. He is the postgraduate coordinator for higher degrees by research, and has a core role in the Institute as Director of Implementation Science, with a focus on development of evidence, the implementation of evidence and the evaluation of impact across policy and practice.

Dr Lockwood is responsible for the Institutes dissemination strategies and specialist web based platforms, tools and resources for transferring evidence in to practice at the point of care for the health professions, and the Institutes guideline development program. These are currently utilised by over 9000 health services around the world to facilitate the transfer of knowledge to policy and practice. Dr Lockwood was instrumental in the development of CAN-Implement.Pro© for best practice in guideline adaptation and a conceptual model for getting evidence in to practice, its worldwide implementation and evaluation.
Dr Lockwood has collaborative agreements with universities in and has delivered guest lectures and workshops in the USA, Canada, Finland, across Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Myanmar among other countries on the topics of evidence-based healthcare, systematic review methods and dissemination and implementation of best practice, particularly in relation to a highly cited Conceptual Model of Evidence-based healthcare. As Director of the Cochrane Nursing Care Field he has a specific focus on the dissemination and awareness raising in relation to Cochrane review findings for health care practice.

Irene Maweu

Irene is a steering committee member at G-I-N African Community. She has a long experience working in HIV AIDS in East and West African regions especially with Development Agencies and medical societies, in the areas of developing strategies for prevention, care, capacity building for PLWHIV and healthcare workers and evaluating the use of clinical practice guidelines.
By exchange and partnerships with development partners, private and public sector and Non-Governmental Organizations she has exceptional experience. Some of the organisations include; GIZ, DISCOK, Ministry of Water and Health in Kenya, Institute of Economic Affairs and the Pan African Society for Cardiology, just to name a few.
Based on her experience with working with healthcare workers, health related service providers, development agencies and ministries, she developed a keen interest in advocating for clinical practice guidelines and is currently dedicating time to improve the availability and use of clinical practice guidelines in Africa. Her educational background is in strategic management and business administration. Dr. Amir Qaseem

Dr. Qaseem is responsible for leading the American College of Physicians’ evidence-based medicine and clinical practice guidelines program, one of the oldest programs in the United States, including writing of the clinical guidelines, and overseeing the College’s Clinical Guidelines Committee. Dr Qaseem is also in charge of directing the ACP’s physician performance measurement program and is responsible for ACP’s Performance Measurement Committee. He also leads the High Value Care Task Force evaluating and publishing the benefits, harms, and costs of various diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions. Dr Qaseem’s work includes development and implementation of ACP’s quality improvement and educational programs.
Dr Qaseem is also involved in several international collaborations to develop joint clinical guidelines and improve quality of care across different countries. Dr Qaseem has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals including clinical practice guidelines, implementation of clinical guidelines, quality improvement, performance measurement, and health policy related issues. Some of the papers authored by Dr Qaseem are in the top ten most read articles in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr Qaseem has been invited to speak and has presented at several national and international conferences on issues related to health policy, evidence-based medicine, guideline development, guideline and evidence grading, and topics associated with performance measurement and quality of care. Dr Qaseem is also on governance boards and committees of various national and international organizations. Dr Qaseem was Chair of the Guidelines International Network (G-I-N) from 2012-13 and was re-elected for 2013-14. He remains a member of G-I-N Board of Trustees.

Dr. Eric Schneider

Eric Schneider, M.D., M.Sc., is senior vice president for policy and research at The Commonwealth Fund, a national philanthropy engaged in independent research on health and social policy issues.

Dr. Schneider’s research has focused on the development and use of performance measures to evaluate the quality of health care. Prior to joining the Fund, Dr. Schneider held the RAND Distinguished Chair in Health Care Quality. In 2009, he was the first director of RAND’s Boston office. From 1997, he was faculty of Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health where he taught health policy and quality improvement in health care and practiced primary care internal medicine at the Jen Center for Primary Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Schneider holds a B.S., cum laude, in Biology from Columbia University, an M.Sc. from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Succeeding eminent scientists including David Sackett, Mike Gent, Peter Tugwell, George Browman and Brian Haynes, Dr. Schünemann is chair of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University, widely considered the birthplace of evidence-based medicine. He trained in internal medicine, epidemiology, preventive medicine and public health. Having contributed to over 400 peer-reviewed publications (across a broad area of health care questions) he is co-chair of the GRADE working group, co-director of the World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating center for evidence informed policy-making, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Guideline International Network, the Cochrane Collaboration Steering Group, and WHO committees. He led or participated in numerous guideline panels, including at the WHO, the American College of Physicians, American Thoracic Society, the World Allergy Organization and drafted the first version of the WHO’s handbook on guideline development. Recently, he has focused on practical application of his work by researchers and clinicians through contributions to the guideline development tool (www.gradepro.org), the guideline checklist (cebgrade.mcmaster.ca/guidecheck.html) and GRADE evidence to decision frameworks (www.decide-collaboration.eu). He enjoys his second home in Italy and long distance bike rides.

Stijn Van de Velde, PhD

Stijn Van de Velde (Physiotherapist, PhD) is the founding editor-in-chief of EBMPracticeNet, a national electronic information service with a computerised decision support system (CDSS) in Belgium. Now Stijn is a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for Health Services. His current research project aims to improve the impact of CDSS through better content wise development and optimised implementation.
Earlier Stijn worked at the Belgian Centre for Evidence-based Medicine and was co-founder of the Centre for Evidence-Based Practice at Belgian Red Cross-Flanders. Stijn worked part-time as a physiotherapist until May 2015.

Barbara Warren, Psy.D. LMHC

Barbara E. Warren Psy.D., LMHC is Director of  LGBT Programs and Policies in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City where she is leading Mount Sinai’s implementation of the Human Rights Campaign’s and the Joint Commission’s guidelines for LGBT affirmative and culturally competent health care throughout the Mount Sinai Health System . She is also developing and delivering LGBT curricula at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Previously Dr. Warren served as Distinguished Lecturer and Director, Center for LGBT Social Science and Public Policy at Hunter College, City University of New York. For over 21 years, Dr. Warren served on the senior management team of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of New York City, where she was the inaugural Director for the Center’s behavioral health programs and as Director for Planning and Research was responsible for the Center’s local and national health policy and government relations initiatives. Since 2004, she has been working with the US Cochrane Center as part of its consumer advisory initiative and is on the Steering Committee of Consumers United for Evidence Based Healthcare (CUE) and has served on the Steering Group for CCNet, the global consumer advisory group to the International Cochrane Collaboration.  In this role she has been a consumer representative on guideline panels, a reviewer for the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute and developed and delivered many workshops and trainings for consumer advocates in effective consumer participation in evidence based healthcare initiatives.

Grants for members

G-I-N is once again proud to be able to support some of our members from low and lower middle income countries to travel to and attend the conference.  The recipients will all receive complimentary registration for the conference, travel to Amsterdam and hotel accommodation.

A small panel assessed all of the applications from our members and selected three, who have not previously received conference support from G-I-N and who are all extremely engaged with the network.

Mr. Brian Kanaahe Mwebaze Bilal

Brian Kanaahe Mwebaze has been a Prehospital Care Specialist for the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he’s helped African Union Medical Services in training, deployment, evaluation and learning of African Union Health Workers under the African Union Mission on Ebola Outbreak to West Africa. In Uganda, he is affiliated to Uganda Red Cross-First Aid Programme. He is also a Lecturer at Bishop Stuart University-Faculty of Public Health, researcher and Africa Region-Youth ambassador for road safety. He has previously undertaken assignments with UNAIDS-Ndola,Zambia, UNAIDS-Geneva, & WHO-Kinshasa. Brian holds a Bsc, EMT-I, & MPH. When not looking for evidence to help governments, international agencies, academia and youth organisations to knit with a pattern in public health practice, Brian does nutmegs, flipflaps and related Brianinho soccer moves.

Dr. Mbah Patrick Okwen (MD, Health Economist)

Mbah Patrick Okwen is a Cameroonian medical doctor and health economist. He is interested in improving global health outcomes. Patrick does public health research, systematic reviews with both Cochrane and Campbell Collaborations. He currently works at the North West Regional Fund for Health Promotion where amongst other things they help with increasing access to medicines, health governance, and health financing. He is affiliated to the Catholic University of Cameroon (CATUC) department of Health Economics and the Centre for the Development of Best Practices in Health (CDBPS-H). Patrick also works as a health consultant to several international development agencies and governments.

Patrick is currently the lead of the African G-I-N community. In joining the Guidelines International Network, he hopes to increase participation of Africa in both production and consumption of guidelines. He also hopes to use his skills in health economics and mobile technology to contribute to guidelines development. He will be attending his second G-I-N conference come October 2015 in Amsterdam where he will be at the AGM and also presenting a lots of research evidence on guidelines in Africa.

Patrick is married with 4 daughters. He loves music, painting and poetry and enjoys hiking the several hills in Cameroon. Patrick also enjoys tweeting and you can join him @okwen.

Dr. Joseph L. Mathew

Dr. Joseph L. Mathew is a Pediatric Pulmonologist at the Advanced Pediatrics Centre, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh (India). He is a leader of the Evidence Based Medicine movement and attempted to translate research evidence to health-care practice in developing countries. He is active within the Cochrane Collaboration, Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi), Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM), and Guidelines International Network (G-I-N). He was the Founder Chair of HTAi Interest Subgroup for Developing Countries (2008-13) and recently initiated the G-I-N LMIC Working Group (2015). He has contributed significantly towards capacity building efforts for evidence-informed decision-making through the SIGNET Capacity and Capability Building programme. He is the lead author of EURECA (Evidence that is Understandable, Relevant, Extendible, Current and Appraised) and also developed the KNOW ESSENTIALS tool for evidence-informed decision-making in resource-limited settings.

Highlights

The famous Rijksmuseum is home to countless priceless treasures, including Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’ and Vermeer’s ‘The Milkmaid’. It reopened in April 2013 after impressive renovations.
The Rijksmuseum houses 8000 objects and focuses on arts, crafts, and history from around 1200 to 2000. This is where you’ll find fascinating works from Dutch Golden Age painters like Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt, Jacob Isaakszoon van Ruisdael, Frans Hals and Jan Steen.

Van Gogh museum

Having opened on Museumplein in 1973, the Van Gogh Museum is one of the most popular museums in the world, attracting visitors from every corner of the globe. Naturally, this is in large part due to its housing the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh – more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 of his letters.

Anne Frank House

Anne Frank is one of Amsterdam’s most well known former residents. The Anne Frank House at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam is where she lived in hiding with her family for more than two years during World War II. Now converted into a museum it contains a sobering exhibition about the persecution of the Jews during the war, as well as discrimination in general.

Stedelijk museum

In September 2012, the Stedelijk Museum, dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design, reopened following extensive renovations. The development was particularly dramatic, as it not only saw the museum’s original red brick home (dating from 1895) internally modernised, but also the addition of a futuristic-looking construction by Benthem Crouwel Architects, which has since been nicknamed ‘The Bathtub’ by locals.

Albert Cuyp market

Albert Cuypmarkt (Albert Cuyp market) is Amsterdam’s largest general market that sells everything from pillows to prawns at great prices. The clothes on sale tend to be run-of-the-mill cheapies. Albert Cuypmark began trading in 1904. Today there are over 300 stalls on both sides of the Albert Cuypstraat in the neighbourhood of De Pijp. The market gets very crowded on Saturdays.

Negen straatjes

Between Leidsestraat and Raadhuisstraat there is an area known as De 9 Straatjes (The 9 Streets), named after the nine side streets connecting the main canals. Together they constitute a charming neighbourhood full of unique shops, wonderful places to eat and a great atmosphere.

Canals

The number of canals have led Amsterdam to become known as “The Venice of the North”. And thus, a trip to Amsterdam is not complete without a boat cruise on these well known attractions in Amsterdam. A canal tour can be both fascinating and relaxing by day and enchanting and romantic at night when many of the houses and bridges are illuminated. The four main city center canals are Prinsengracht, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Singel. There are also numerous smaller canals in the neighbourhood of Jordaan, of which the Brouwersgracht, the Bloemgracht and the Leliegracht are especially pleasant.

TIP: Many museums and attractions offer free or discounted entrance with the I amsterdam City Card.

Eating & drinking
